United Family (UF) carried out its Back-to-School Donation Drive on 18th September 2026, visiting Akenkase M/A Basic School in the Kwaebibirim District of the Eastern Region to support learners with essential educational materials.
The donation was part of UF’s commitment to supporting children in less-privileged communities and promoting access to education. The organization donated exercise books, stationery, writing pads, learning materials and teachers’ drawing instruments to the school and its learners for the 2026/2027 academic year.
A School in Need of More Teachers
During the visit, United Family learned about one of the school’s major challenges: an urgent shortage of teachers.
The school currently has approximately 101 learners, but only one Head Teacher and two GES teachers are currently available to serve the school. The school also receives support from volunteer teachers from the local community to help keep teaching and learning activities going.
The shortage of teachers is a significant challenge for the school and its learners. United Family is therefore appealing to the Government and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to urgently consider posting additional teachers to Akenkase M/A Basic School.
We believe that every child deserves access to adequate teaching and learning support, regardless of where they live. Providing the school with additional teachers will help ease the pressure on the existing staff and create a better learning environment for the approximately 101 learners.
Helping Put the School on the Map
During the visit, UF also discovered that the school’s location was not properly identified on Google Maps, making it difficult for people unfamiliar with the community to locate the school.
As part of our contribution, United Family assisted in adding the school’s location to Google Maps. This will make it easier for donors, organizations, visitors and other stakeholders to locate the school and potentially connect with the community.
For United Family, the visit was an opportunity to give, listen and understand the needs of the school community. While our purpose was to make a donation, the visit also allowed us to see firsthand some of the challenges affecting teaching and learning at the school.
UF will continue to use its platform to highlight challenges affecting vulnerable communities and encourage individuals, organizations and relevant authorities to support where possible.
We appeal to the Government and GES: Akenkase M/A Basic School needs teachers, and we respectfully ask that this matter be given urgent attention.
